Can I stretch a piece of art on canvas myself?
I've just purchased a print on canvas as a gag gift, intending to have it stretched over a frame. However, I did not look into the cost of having it stretched and it's going to cost a whoooole bunch more than i wanted to pay. Since it's just a joke gift, can I do it myself?
I've found heaps of tutorials online re: stretching unprimed canvas, is it the same procedure for a painted canvas? Do I do anything different? Is it even possible for an absolute layman?

Yes you can. You just need to purchase the need pieces for the from (which slide nicely into one another) and a staple gun. You first cut the canvas to the size of the frame with about three inches of give on each side. You center the frame on the back of the canvas, pulling the canvas sides over the frame then staple on side just in the middle, make sure it is very tight. Then staple to opposite side one in the middle, again important that it is tight. You repeat this on the last two sides (again just one staple in the middle and TIGHT!) You then start anew, one staple on each side of middle, pulling it tight as possible each time. You keep at this, couple staples, opposite side, couple staples next side.... until you have staples (about 7 or 8 each side, depending on the width of frame). The corners are a bit more difficult to describe and will need to look those up to make them look nice. If you plan on framing the neatness of the corners is not as important. Does this all make sense?
I just recently watched my art instructed do this exact thing, and everyone in the class stretches their own canvases so I know it can be done.
